Alan Shearer has reassured Liverpool that they will only face one challenger for the Premier League title this season. The Reds head into this weekend’s Merseyside derby on the back of a shock 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa, and Manchester City’s poor form has led to some suggesting there could be an open title race this season. Shearer argued that there will be a more intense race for the top four and Champions League qualification than there will be for the title.
Alan Shearer said “As I sit here, I don’t see anyone other than Liverpool or Man City for the title, What I do see as an exciting race this season is the battle for the top four. I think it will be more intense than ever. Mikel Arteta has made a great start at Arsenal. He’s got a clear philosophy. That club needed changing and he hasn’t just gone about it slowly. He’s made a lot of progress in a very short space of time. Signing Thomas Partey for the midfield will only add to that. Chelsea have made some big signings and it will be good to see how they get on once Frank Lampard has worked out what his best XI is. I think he’s still working that out after all the changes they’ve made. Leicester will be battling for the top six again.”
