Ron Atkinson was on commentary duties for the England & Holland world cup qualifier but he had one of his eyes on the Republic of Ireland game as well where a lot of his players were involved as well as many players from the premier league.

Ron Atkinson said “Ronnie Whelan would do a great job and Niall Quinn can expect a lot of attention from the opposition defenders. There’s not a lot more to be said of the big man (Paul Mcgrath). He is at the top of the pile in world football and is one of the best. At the moment, he has a knock at the moment. Ray Houghton has played a ridiculous number of games this season and he has been doing that for a good four-five years.

Ron Atkinson said “(On fixture logjam), its so hard to keep players going for the number of matches they play. We might end up having over 70 fixtures this season. We want to be involved in everything and with that ambition, you know there will be an incredible number of tough matches. You could have a very tired bunch of international players by the time the season is over.”
