Steve Nicol declared that day that he did not care where he would play for Liverpool as long as he was playing. Nicol had become a utility man for the club fitting in at any position that the team needed and admitted that he enjoyed the most when he was a central defender when he was playing with John Barnes.

Steve Nicol said “I class myself now as a central defender. That’s where I started my career. My debut for Ayr was as centre half against Falkirk, and then I moved to left-back. When I was playing behind John Barnes a few seasons ago, we were both fired up. That’s down to your attitude if I am picked in a particular position I just go and get on with it. It’s for the good of the team and it’s a team game, so you can’t really say you don’t. Want to play here or you don’t want to play there. I think being versatile has helped me over the years.”
