Sunderland Academy of Light graduate Dan Neil is reportedly in talks with Scottish Premiership giants Rangers, as per recent reports. The midfielder, who spent the latter part of last season on loan at Championship club Ipswich Town, is being touted as a promising addition to the Rangers squad. Former Sunderland striker Kevin Kyle has voiced his support for Neil’s potential move to Ibrox, emphasizing the player’s capabilities and contributions.
Kevin Kyle said: “I would go regularly to watch Sunderland three, four times a year. And I remember when Dan Neil broke into the first team, he was the next big thing that the Sunderland fans had expectations for. They got the club through the leagues, was the captain, and then got an opportunity where I don’t think he was going to get many games in the Premier League with Sunderland. So he took the move to Ipswich and he’s done well at Ipswich. I’ve always said that. There was talk about maybe a year ago in the same kind of rumours. I think that Dan Neil would be a great addition to Rangers. I’ve seen him up close and he’s a hardworking, technical, good midfielder. He would be a good addition for Rangers as well. He’s tenacious in the midfield, gets about, keeps things simple. And he was the captain of Sunderland. He took them up through two leagues. So he’s well respected.”
Neil’s journey from Sunderland to Ipswich Town was marked by limited playing time due to several summer transfer additions at Sunderland, which led to his loan spell in January. Despite these challenges, Neil’s performances at Ipswich have been commendable, reinforcing his reputation as a tenacious and technically skilled midfielder. His leadership qualities, demonstrated by captaining Sunderland through two promotions, have garnered respect and admiration.
The potential move to Rangers could provide Neil with a fresh start and an opportunity to showcase his abilities on a larger stage. With Kyle’s endorsement, the transfer could be a strategic step for both Neil and Rangers, enhancing the squad’s midfield options and adding a player with proven leadership and technical skills.
