Sunderland celebrated a significant achievement by securing a seventh-place finish in the Premier League with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light. This victory not only marked a memorable day for manager Régis Le Bris but also guaranteed Sunderland a spot in next season’s Europa League. The Black Cats took the lead with a goal from Trai Hume and an own goal by Malo Gusto, while Chelsea’s Cole Palmer managed to narrow the gap, creating a tense atmosphere for the final half-hour.
Régis Le Bris said: “I’m proud of the lads, proud of the atmosphere in the stadium, the connection we had once again today to create something special. We had to win, and I think we were really focused on the way we wanted to play this game, showed good control and scored when it was on, and finally the last part of the game was well managed with maturity.”
Régis Le Bris added: “It’s different, Wembley was absolutely fantastic as well. It’s a special place in English football, and here today it’s the continuity of our journey. The journey is really special because we feel the alignment in the club with our fans, and finally it’s a tribute to our collective work and it’s a really nice feeling.”
Régis Le Bris explained: “Really late to be fair, during added time. Before we were just focused on our game, which was a tough game, it was only 2-1. Granit came near the dugout asking what the situation was. I didn’t know before. Proc [Michael Proctor] told me we were seventh: ‘Oh, really? With just one minute to go, let’s push till the end’.”
The match was a testament to Sunderland’s resilience and strategic gameplay, which allowed them to maintain their lead despite Chelsea’s efforts to equalize. The atmosphere at the Stadium of Light was electric, with fans showing unwavering support for their team. Le Bris’s leadership and the team’s collective effort were pivotal in achieving this milestone, reflecting the strong bond between the club and its supporters. The victory not only highlights Sunderland’s progress but also sets the stage for their participation in European competitions next season, promising an exciting journey ahead for the club and its fans.
