David Moyes
Everton’s Premier League season concluded with a sense of disappointment as they finished 13th, the same position as last year, despite aspirations of European football. Joao Palhinha’s first-half goal for Spurs secured their victory, ensuring their Premier League survival while leaving Everton in the bottom half of the table. The Blues ended the season with just one more point than the previous year.
David Moyes said: “I’m disappointed in the last six or seven weeks. For probably three quarters of the season we’ve been very good. In the last six or seven weeks we have been really disappointed, but not always.”
Moyes highlighted the challenges faced during the match, particularly the difficulty in containing Mathys Tel, who posed a constant threat on the right flank. The absence of key players like Idrissa Gueye and Jarrad Branthwaite due to injuries, and Nathan Patterson due to illness, limited Moyes’ options for changes. Only the strikers were altered from the side that lost to Sunderland, with Thierno Barry starting ahead of Beto.
David Moyes said: “If I thought it was better I would have done it.”
Reflecting on the match, Moyes acknowledged that Everton struggled in the first half but managed to stay in the game until the end. He noted the team’s resilience in preventing Tottenham from extending their lead, although opportunities were scarce until the final 10 to 15 minutes when the introduction of younger players made a noticeable impact.
David Moyes said: “I thought we didn’t play well in the first half. I thought we were resilient enough not to let Tottenham go any further ahead. It always meant that we were in the game right to the end, and probably we were the better team in the last 20 minutes. But not for the other part of the game, so I couldn’t put my hand up and admit to that. But we made sure Tottenham didn’t get too much, but we didn’t have any opportunities really until 10, 15 minutes to go when we brought in a couple of the younger boys who made a big difference, so we were pleased with that.”
The season’s finale left Everton fans reflecting on what could have been, as the team once again missed out on European competition. Moyes’ comments underscore the need for reflection and improvement as the club looks ahead to the next campaign.
