The Premier League Golf Classic is gearing up to unite fans of football and golf in a unique event at Formby Hall. Featuring a mix of past and present top-flight footballers, the event aims to raise funds for the Oliver King Foundation while offering a day filled with entertainment and competition. Notable former players such as Neil Mellor and Chris Kirkland will represent Liverpool, while Alan Stubbs and Phil Jagielka will stand for Everton. The event will also see participation from players across northern teams, including former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam and local ex-professional Ryan Taylor.
Gary Barker said: “I’ve been sat on this idea for two years, basically I’ve always thought there should be a crossover sport, an event that’s easily accessible to the public to the general football and golf fan. So I play quite a lot of golf with quite a few of the players anyway, I’ve got a good relationship with a lot of footballers. We’d played golf and I’d told a couple of them the idea when we got to the 19th hole, shall we say and they were like, ‘just do it, just we’ll help you’. It’s been a huge success in terms of getting the players in, and the players of the calibre that I’ve got in are fantastic. There’s going to be some great golf, some absolute legends of the Premier League. We’ve got a fan zone going on, so we’ve got entertainment, we’ve got stuff on for the kids, we got entertainment for the adults, food and drink. It’s going to be a full day of entertainment, whether you like football or you just want to bring your kids out for a day out, you want to try and get them into the golf. We are also raising money for the Oliver King Foundation as well so on the day whatever we make the Oliver King Foundation will get the money that’s being raised on the day, which is something that I’ve always wanted to do. That is the idea (to bring club legends closer). So you’ve got other events similar to mine, the likes of Icon Series which I watched and I was hooked on and thought it was absolutely fantastic. But there’s one thing about it, it’s not accessible to your average fella who goes the match because it’s Dubai or Thailand or wherever. I want to keep this one local for everybody. This year we’re playing the Northern one at a Formby home, which is fantastic. So you’re going to be able to see your heroes that I grew up watching.”
The event promises a comprehensive fan experience, with a fan zone featuring live music, DJs, and pop-up shops. Doors will open at 12 pm, with the golf competition teeing off at 1 pm. The day is designed to be accessible to all, offering a chance for fans to see their football heroes up close while enjoying a day of golf. Additionally, the event is set to coincide with the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July, adding to the excitement for golf enthusiasts.
Tickets for the Premier League Golf Classic are currently on sale, offering fans a chance to be part of this exciting crossover event that combines the love of football and golf while supporting a noble cause.
