jessie Lingard
Jesse Lingard’s departure from Manchester United marked a significant turning point in his career, as he moved on to join Nottingham Forest for a brief period. The decision to leave the club where he spent 22 years was emotionally taxing for the now 33-year-old midfielder. Lingard recently opened up about the experience, sharing the poignant moments that led to his decision to seek new challenges.
Jesse Lingard said: “It didn’t hit me until afterwards, really. I remember we trained and stuff, like a normal day, and then Richard [Merron, physio] came up to me and said, ‘I’ll always remember your FA Cup goal and when we won the Youth Cup.’ And then it suddenly hit me. I got into my car and started crying. I cried all the way home. That was hard.”
Jesse Lingard continued: “He [my brother] said to me, ‘How does it feel leaving United after 22 years?’ and I just broke down. I started crying again. I was there pretty much all my life. All I’ve ever known is Manchester United. To leave was emotional and it lasted quite a bit. But eventually, you find a new team and a new set of teammates.”
Jesse Lingard added: “It was game time. I just wanted to play football and that was the main aim. There was no point in staying there if I wasn’t going to play. I wanted to go to a new team, play regularly and be happy on the pitch.”
Lingard’s tenure at Nottingham Forest was brief, lasting just one season with 20 appearances. Despite the short stint, he expressed appreciation for the club’s enthusiasm and commitment to bringing him on board.
Jesse Lingard remarked: “I thought they [Forest] showed so much eagerness and love towards me. The manager came to my house. The owners wanted to fly me to Greece to get the deal over the line. When a team shows that much love, it’s really hard to say no, to be honest.”
Lingard’s reflections highlight the emotional complexities athletes face when leaving a long-term club. His decision underscores the importance of playing time and personal happiness in a player’s career. As he continues his journey, Lingard’s experiences serve as a reminder of the personal sacrifices and emotional resilience required in professional sports.
