World Cup 2026
As the FIFA World Cup approaches, discussions around set-piece strategies have gained momentum. Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva, now a member of the Technical Study Group (TSG), expressed his views on the prominence of set-pieces in the tournament. Silva highlighted the challenge national teams might face in replicating the success Arsenal has enjoyed with set-pieces, given the limited preparation time available to national sides.
Gilberto Silva said: “This season Arsenal have scored so many goals from set-pieces. This became something very special, a strong weapon for them, and they took advantage. They have got the players to do that – the two centre-backs (William) Saliba and Gabriel and some other players, they have done so great. I’m not so sure if the World Cup is going to be the same way, because you don’t have so much time to prepare the team for these tournaments. Of course, it’s a weapon that can be used, and they have to use this, but not as a main one.”
Pascal Zuberbuhler, the TSG’s chief and former Switzerland goalkeeper, emphasized the critical role referees will play in monitoring set-piece situations during the World Cup. He acknowledged the challenges referees face in spotting fouls amidst the crowded penalty area but expressed confidence in the quality of officiating at the tournament.
Pascal Zuberbuhler said: “What has happened, especially in the Premier League with Arsenal, this is a trend, yes, but I am sure for our World Cup, we have the best referees there, and the referees will be a key part on these situations. It’s difficult for the referees because a little foul on the goalkeeper, and with so many people around you, it’s not easy to see this, but I’m sure we at FIFA have the best referees anyway and we will deal with this in a very good way.”
The TSG plans to provide analysis from all 104 matches at the tournament in North America, aiming to enhance the understanding of the sport globally. Zuberbuhler’s comments underline the importance of fair play and the role of referees in maintaining the integrity of the game during high-stakes matches.
In summary, while Arsenal has demonstrated the effectiveness of set-pieces in the Premier League, the World Cup presents a different challenge for national teams. The limited preparation time and the emphasis on referee vigilance will be crucial factors in determining the success of set-piece strategies at the tournament.
