VAR NO GOAL
In a dramatic Premier League encounter, Arsenal’s late goal against West Ham was disallowed after a VAR intervention, leading to heated discussions among fans and analysts. The incident occurred when Nuno Espirito Santo’s side appeared to have equalized deep into stoppage time, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Referee Kavanagh, who initially allowed the goal, reversed his decision after reviewing the pitch-side monitor, awarding a free-kick to Arsenal.
Jamie Carragher said: “While West Ham were furious that the goal was ruled out, Carragher believes Kavanagh and VAR came to the right call in the end. Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, the ex-Liverpool defender dissected the incident and explained how the force of Pablo’s ‘grip’ made the decision a straightforward one for the referee.”
Jamie Carragher continued: “Well people are claiming, Manchester City fans might be claiming this, Bernardo Silva did one at Everton last week. And we weren’t sitting on this show saying that shouldn’t be a penalty. Now, there is a reason this is a foul on the goalkeeper – and it is, whether you like Arsenal or not, don’t let that distort the facts. The fact is this is a foul.”
Jamie Carragher further added: “Now, you could argue about the shirt tug here. I’m not going to go too much on that because he’s getting held and there’s grappling later on. Now we know Pablo is getting held by Trossard, we know that. It’s that. It’s not even the arm on him. It’s the grip. It’s the holding. Now if that arm was in the air flailing, I’d probably say it’s not. But you can’t grab a goalkeeper on the arm here and stop him raising his hand.”
The decision has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with some fans accusing Arsenal of consistently benefiting from such calls. Carragher, however, dismissed these claims, emphasizing that the decision was based on the rules and not favoritism. He pointed out similar incidents involving other teams, highlighting the consistency in refereeing decisions regarding fouls on goalkeepers.
The incident has reignited debates over the use of VAR in the Premier League, with opinions divided on its impact on the game. While some argue that it ensures fairness and accuracy, others believe it disrupts the flow of the game and leads to controversial decisions. As the season progresses, the role of VAR in crucial match moments will undoubtedly continue to be a focal point of discussion among fans and pundits alike.
