Chelsea’s interim manager, Calum McFarlane, has addressed concerns regarding player morale and motivation as the team prepares for their upcoming clash against Liverpool. The Blues have been navigating a difficult period, marked by a recent defeat to Nottingham Forest, which prompted immediate preparations for their next fixture.
Calum McFarlane said: “No, I wouldn’t agree with that. The performances haven’t been good enough. We’re in a really bad run at the moment. The Leeds performance was a glimmer where we thought we could build on that and we weren’t able to do that.”
Calum McFarlane continued: “Yeah, it’s down to all of us. I can be honest and open and we reviewed the game, we made some big mistakes in that first 15 minutes and Nottingham Forest punished us. You can’t do that at this level. You can’t do that against teams that are fighting for their lives to stay in the league.”
Calum McFarlane added: “Especially the form we’re in, it hits us a little bit harder, the confidence isn’t there to go and bounce back. Regardless of that, at any level, you can’t make the mistakes that we did in the first 15 minutes and we reviewed the game and we’re going to do our best to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
The defeat to Nottingham Forest was particularly disappointing, as Chelsea found themselves 2-0 down early in the match. McFarlane’s decision to have the squad return to training the next day highlights his commitment to rectifying these issues. Reports suggest that some players were previously dissatisfied with the lack of rest days under former management, but McFarlane has emphasized the importance of preparation and accountability.
As Chelsea prepares to face Liverpool at Anfield, McFarlane’s focus remains on improving performance and regaining confidence. The manager’s candid acknowledgment of the team’s shortcomings and his proactive approach to addressing them could be pivotal in turning the season around for the Blues.
