Nottingham Forest secured a 1-1 draw against Porto in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, setting up an intriguing return fixture at the City Ground. The match saw an early goal from Porto’s William Gomes, which was quickly countered by an own goal from Martim Fernandes, keeping the tie finely balanced. Nottingham Forest’s head coach, Vitor Pereira, remained reserved in his comments regarding a disallowed goal that could have given his team the lead.
Vitor Pereira said: “It is better to keep the opinion with me.”
Despite the setback of the disallowed goal, Pereira expressed satisfaction with the overall performance and result. Returning to his former club, the Portuguese manager was tasked with navigating the dual objectives of progressing in European competition and ensuring Premier League survival. This balancing act was evident in his decision to make nine changes to the starting lineup from their previous victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Pereira told TNT Sports: “The first two subs we did (taking off Chris Wood and Murillo at half-time) I was thinking about the next game against Villa. It’s very important for us to get points in the league and this is the only way.”
He added: “A good result, in my opinion. The players that started today did good work. In the end, 1-1, the game is open to play at home and decide qualification. Porto playing at home are a strong team. They have momentum with supporters. I think we did well. The players tried everything; 1-1 is a good result and playing at home we will see what we can do.”
The match highlighted the strategic depth of Pereira’s squad, as goalkeeper Stefan Ortega delivered a standout performance with crucial saves to keep Forest in contention. The team’s adaptability and resilience will be tested further as they prepare for the decisive second leg against Porto, alongside a critical Premier League fixture against Aston Villa.
Nottingham Forest’s ability to juggle their European ambitions with domestic responsibilities will be crucial in the coming weeks. The 1-1 draw leaves the tie open, with everything to play for in the return leg at the City Ground.
