Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has voiced his belief that the club can mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title next season, contingent upon strategic recruitment in the upcoming summer transfer window. United, who last claimed the league title in 2013, have struggled to maintain a consistent challenge in recent years. However, under the management of Michael Carrick, the team has shown promising form, positioning themselves as strong contenders behind Arsenal and Manchester City this season.
Harry Maguire said: “I feel like the squad is starting to look like something that is a strong squad. But this summer’s going to be big, really, really big. Looking at the Premier League at the moment, I think over the last few years you’ve obviously had Manchester City, who were really tough to catch, and before the start of the season, you knew you had to put a points tally together where it was some going to catch them. I think next season you look at it and I think we’ve got to be in the bracket where if we get the recruitment right and everything’s positive from now to the end of the season and we keep going on the curve there’s no ceiling to where we can reach. We’ve got to be in the conversation to go and win the big trophies.”
Maguire’s optimism is fueled by United’s recent transfer activity, which saw an investment of £225 million last summer. The arrivals of players like Senne Lammens, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko have contributed to the squad’s strengthening, providing Maguire with confidence that a similar approach in 2026 could further enhance their competitive edge, even with a more demanding schedule.
The captain remains determined for United to remain in the title race come spring next season. Reflecting on his tenure at the club, Maguire, who has signed on for an eighth season at Old Trafford, continues to dream of lifting major trophies with the team.
Harry Maguire said: “I want to win big trophies, I think that’s part of playing for this club. I always say football is about memories and you can create memories by having iconic matches, scoring goals, but the bottom line is you get memories from winning big trophies. I want to be part of that. That’s everyone’s dream.”
United’s recent resurgence under Carrick’s leadership has closed the gap on their rivals, with Liverpool’s title-winning tally of 84 points last season and Arsenal’s current trajectory in the mid-80s serving as benchmarks. Maguire acknowledges the need to avoid slow starts that have previously hindered their title aspirations and is eager to see the team sustain their momentum into the next campaign.
