Jermain Defoe
Former Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has taken his first steps into management as he was appointed the manager of National League club Woking. Defoe’s debut on the touchline was nothing short of dramatic, as his team shared the spoils in a thrilling six-goal encounter against Eastleigh. The match ended in a 3-3 draw, highlighted by a late equalizer from Kian Pennant, the nephew of Defoe’s former England Under-21 teammate, Jermaine Pennant.
Jermain Defoe said: “The last few days have been crazy, haven’t they? But you have to understand it’s part and parcel of the game now and I said to the players there has been a lot of noise around the club and sometimes it’s not easy to deal with for the players. We will deal with that and the fact they showed that sort of character towards the end of the game, we should have gone on and won it, we were the better team.”
Defoe’s appointment as Woking’s manager was complemented by the addition of another former Sunderland star, Paul Bracewell, who has joined as the assistant manager. The new managerial duo faced immediate challenges both on and off the pitch, with Defoe praising his players’ resilience during the match against Eastleigh.
As Woking prepares for the second part of a hectic Easter weekend, Defoe’s focus now shifts to their upcoming clash with Braintree Town, a team struggling at the bottom of the National League table. Despite Braintree’s recent struggles, Defoe remains cautious and emphasizes the importance of recovery and preparation for his team.
Jermain Defoe continued: “It’s important for the players to recover. We have to recover. We had a good presentation yesterday, someone came in I’d worked with previously and he came in and did a presentation on high level performance and recovery, sleep and nutrition and when it’s back-to-back, how do you recover to get those level of performances. Hopefully, the players took that on board and you don’t want to make excuses because it’s the same for the other teams that have played loads of games. But if we can recover and do things the right way, hopefully we can go into the game fresh.”
Defoe’s managerial debut has set the stage for an intriguing journey ahead, as he navigates the challenges of leading Woking in the National League. His experience and leadership will be crucial as the team aims to build on their promising start under his guidance.
