Former England, Newcastle and Blackburn striker Alan Shearer believes Chelsea’s defensive record away from home must improve if they are to challenge for the Premier League title. Despite claiming a top-four finish last season, there were question marks over the Blues’ defending as they conceded 54 goals – the most of any side in the top 10. Lampard has brought in the experienced Thiago Silva on a free transfer and also signed left-back Ben Chilwell. The former made his Premier League debut in Saturday’s 3-3 draw against West Brom, but made an error as the Blues trailed 3-0 at the break.
Alan Shearer said “They’ve kept one clean sheet in 21 away games under Frank Lampard and a lot of times Kepa has taken flack for that, rightly so, and he was left out today, but his defenders have got to start accepting responsibility, They are nowhere near good enough at this moment in time and basic errors have cost them.”
