Roberto De Zerbi
Roberto De Zerbi has been appointed as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, signing a lucrative five-year contract. Tasked with steering the club away from relegation, De Zerbi’s appointment also reflects a long-term vision for the club. Known for his dynamic and unique style of play, the Italian coach has previously impressed at clubs like Marseille, Brighton, and Shakhtar Donetsk. His coaching philosophy has garnered admiration from prominent figures in football, including Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.
Pep Guardiola said: “Roberto is one of the most influential managers in the last 20 years. There is no team playing the way they play – it’s unique. I had the feeling when he arrived the impact he would have in the Premier League would be great – I didn’t expect him to do it in this short space of time. He creates 20 or 25 chances per game, better by far than most opponents. He monopolises the ball in a way it hasn’t been for a long time. Brighton is the master of when to pass to the free man. They move at the right time. They don’t pass the ball until the opponent moves. If you don’t play at a high level he can do whatever he wants against you. They are one of the teams I try to learn a lot from.”
Arne Slot said: “I see him as one of the best coaches in the world. In my opinion, you shouldn’t always be judged by the number of trophies you win, but also by the way your teams play. I think he already coaches a big team because Marseille are a big club right now, and historically as well. I’m not the one who recruits coaches, but if I were, he would certainly be very high on my list for a big club.”
Luis Enrique said: “De Zerbi is a great coach that I like. He’s one of the best coaches in the league. He’s still young, and tonight’s match isn’t going to make me change my mind. I like De Zerbi’s mentality. He will fight for possession and press high, with one-on-one situations. The match is not only emotional, but also tactical.”
Jurgen Klopp said: “We know how difficult it is against Brighton. Roberto is doing an incredible job there, it’s a different game against Brighton. We were the first opponents when Roberto arrived and we had no idea what to expect. It was quite impressive how quick he got the team playing in his way. Since then it only got better.”
Medhi Benatia said: “His passion is overflowing. You should see how he prepares matches. There’s a touch of Pep Guardiola in him, but trust me, he’s unique. He breathes football and he breathes life. In that order.”
Joao Pedro said: “It’s the first time I’ve trained with a coach like him. He is, for me, in the top three in the world. Because of how he thinks about football, how he looks at it. I’ve never seen a coach who coaches like him. He pushes us, in the best way. He helps us a lot.”
Tony Bloom said: “He has been pretty amazing. His track record, when we looked into it in a lot of detail, was exceptionally good. But I didn’t quite realise the impact he would have when he came in. He has been hugely influential for so many players. He is so good at improving them.”
De Zerbi’s appointment at Tottenham is seen as a strategic move to not only secure the club’s immediate future but also to instill a style of play that could redefine the team’s identity. His emphasis on possession, tactical intelligence, and player development has set him apart as a visionary in modern football. As he takes the helm at Spurs, the club and its supporters are hopeful for a transformative journey under his leadership.
