Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea’s midfielder Enzo Fernandez has sparked speculation about his future at Stamford Bridge after expressing uncertainty about where he will be playing next season. Despite this growing uncertainty, Chelsea retains significant control over the situation. The club faces not only the potential loss of one of their standout players but also a financial obligation, as River Plate is entitled to five percent of any future transfer fee due to a previous agreement when they sold Fernandez to Benfica in 2022.
The situation surrounding Fernandez began to unravel following Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League, marking a challenging period for the team with four consecutive losses. Speaking to ESPN after the match, the World Cup winner shared his thoughts.
Enzo Fernandez said: “I don’t know what the future holds. Right now I’m focused on this; there are eight games left and the FA Cup. Then there’s the World Cup, and after that, we’ll see.”
A week later, Fernandez further fueled speculation by expressing a desire to live in Madrid. This has raised concerns about a potential shift in Chelsea’s strategy, which could embolden interest in other key players such as Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo.
Fernandez is not the only one showing signs of frustration. Marc Cucurella recently criticized Chelsea’s recruitment strategy, highlighting a lack of experience as a critical factor in their Champions League collapse against PSG.
Marc Cucurella said: “The foundations are there. But to fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or Champions League, you need more. Against PSG, we lacked players that had gone through situations like that… You need time, I know the young players are the ones that will have the experience in the future. But you need to find the balance between both worlds.”
Cucurella also reflected on the impact of Enzo Maresca’s unexpected departure in January, which he believes had a significant effect on the team.
Marc Cucurella said: “The moment Enzo Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season.”
Fernandez echoed similar sentiments regarding Maresca’s departure.
Enzo Fernandez said: “I do not understand why that [Maresca getting sacked] happened. As players, there are things we don’t understand, and the way they try to handle the situations. I don’t have an answer for this. I don’t know… It was a departure that hurt me a lot. We had an identity and Maresca gave us structure. Sometimes in football there are good or bad results, but Maresca always had a clear identity. We were all really hurt by his departure, especially in the middle of the season… it was a big change for the team. Everyone was surprised.”
As Chelsea navigates this challenging period, the club’s management will need to address these internal concerns to stabilize the team and retain key players like Fernandez.
