Estevao Willian
Since May 2022, Chelsea has been under the ownership of Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, alongside Todd Boehly. This new era at Stamford Bridge has seen a concerted effort to sign some of the most promising young players globally. Despite securing long-term contracts for talents like Estevao Willian, Chelsea has faced criticism for not adequately balancing their squad with experienced players who bring leadership and quality.
Liam Rosenior said: “It goes without saying really the experience he has in the game. He’s played a number of games at the highest level, and although he didn’t really speak much English, he was so good with me and always wanted to help me improve. He was obviously playing a lot of games for Chelsea, and quite regularly for someone of his age, he was taking time on the training pitch to try and help me out. Whenever you get to play and train with older players, you learn a lot from them. I’m really grateful. We’re having really detailed conversations now about the areas that we want to strengthen. I’ve had great conversations about what I think we need. We’re very aligned, actually, in terms of where we want to strengthen and how we go about that, which is very exciting. The most important bit, though, is making sure we get the now right as well. It’s great to be able to plan for the future, but I want to make sure we’re also in a good place. We want to win. That’s why I’m here, and I’m having really good conversations with the ownership and sporting directors about that.”
The club’s recent strategy has been to integrate young talents into the first team, as evidenced by the debut of a Newcastle United defender at just 17 years old under Thomas Tuchel. This player, who later joined Newcastle on loan, highlighted the invaluable experience gained from training alongside seasoned professionals at Chelsea.
Looking ahead, Chelsea’s sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, are expected to lead the recruitment process. They are focusing on aligning the club’s immediate needs with its long-term vision. The directors have been in discussions to identify areas for strengthening the squad, ensuring that Chelsea not only plans for the future but also remains competitive in the present.
The BlueCo model, which has guided Chelsea’s recent operations, remains a cornerstone of the club’s strategy. Despite some challenges, the directors have shown no intention of deviating from this approach, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning and execution to achieve both short-term success and long-term sustainability.
