Leeds United faced a significant setback during their recent match as Gabriel Gudmundsson was sent off, marking the first dismissal for the club since December 2023. The red card was issued after Gudmundsson received a second yellow for a foul on Ismaila Sarr during first-half stoppage time. This incident occurred shortly after Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a penalty, adding to the match’s drama. Referee Bramall initially seemed to forget Gudmundsson’s earlier booking before eventually showing the red card.
Daniel Farke said: “I’m not sure if they are really needed because everyone in the stadium and on the TV has the same view, it was doubtful. If it was a foul, it wasn’t even close to a yellow card. There was no pace in the tackle, in the duel, there was not a tactical foul. It was not even close to a yellow card. Then it’s most disappointing that he has forgotten that this player was already on the yellow card and was then himself surprised that this decision means a sending off.”
Farke continued: “And I’m not asking for a yellow, red card for Brennan Johnson. But Gabi Gudmundsson for his second foul in the game for such a [similar] situation – again, was even doubtful if it was really a foul – gets sent off. And then the game is influenced in a key manner, because you always speak about details that make the difference. And if you have one less outfield player, it means a ten per cent difference, more or less. Of course, this was a huge, huge disadvantage in the second half that has influenced the game a lot. Thank God we found a way somehow to travel still points.”
The decision to dismiss Gudmundsson was not the only contentious moment in the match. Brennan Johnson, who had also been booked earlier, committed a challenge on James Justin that appeared more reckless than Gudmundsson’s second offense. Despite this, Johnson remained on the field, which Farke highlighted in his post-match comments. The incident underscored the impact of refereeing decisions on the game’s outcome, as Leeds had to play with ten men for the remainder of the match. Despite the setback, Farke expressed relief that his team managed to secure points from the encounter.
