Moises Caicedo
Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo is on the brink of a two-match suspension after receiving his ninth yellow card of the Premier League season during the club’s recent defeat to Newcastle United. The Ecuadorian midfielder was penalized for a tackle on Nick Woltemade, which many believe was fairly won. However, Chelsea cannot appeal yellow card decisions, meaning Caicedo’s next caution will trigger a suspension. This situation places him at risk of missing crucial matches against Manchester City and Manchester United, depending on upcoming results.
The potential suspension could see Caicedo sidelined for Chelsea’s clash against Manchester City, a fixture that might be rescheduled based on both teams’ progress in the Champions League. If Caicedo avoids a booking against Everton but receives a yellow card against Manchester City, he will miss the matches against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge and Brighton at the Amex Stadium, both of which are subject to change due to FA Cup outcomes.
Liam Rosenior said: “I’m disappointed. There’s more focus and emphasis on the things that don’t matter. I’m going to make it really clear. I want to protect my players. I’m respectful to the game. My players made the decision that they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball and show unity and leadership. That is not my decision. That was a decision between the leadership group and the team.”
Liam Rosenior continued: “There is nothing that they’re doing with that huddle that is disrespectful to the opposition. We had a meeting with the referee, my assistant goes in, the first thing he talks about is our huddle. It wasn’t the goalkeeper coach that was in our half. People were at that game Arsenal, I said what I said. We’re not being disrespectful to the opposition.”
Liam Rosenior added: “If Paul had focused more on his job, which was to make the right decision, we have a penalty today. I don’t think anybody in this room can say that Woltemade doesn’t kick Cole Palmer down in the box. So, let’s focus on the things that are important. My team showing unity is not as important as getting the decisions right on the pitch.”
Liam Rosenior concluded: “I’ll be honest, I didn’t speak to Paul today or his officials. I thought it wasn’t the right thing to do today. But I’ll be speaking to PGMOL. I’ll be speaking to the refs and just trying to get an understanding of why that happened today.”
The match against Newcastle was further marred by referee Paul Tierney’s controversial decisions, including disrupting Chelsea’s pre-match huddle and denying a penalty to Cole Palmer after he was brought down in the box. Rosenior expressed his dissatisfaction with the focus on non-essential matters rather than crucial on-pitch decisions. He emphasized the importance of getting decisions right and protecting his players, signaling his intent to discuss the issues with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).
