Vitor Pereira
Nottingham Forest managed to secure their place in the next round of the Europa League despite a tense second-leg encounter against Fenerbahce. The Turkish team, trailing by three goals from the first leg in Istanbul, put up a spirited fight at the City Ground, leading 2-0 with just over 45 minutes played. However, Forest held their nerve to advance, thanks to their aggregate advantage.
Vitor Pereira said: “We were suffering a bit. But we are in a moment of the season where we need to think not about one game, but about two games, about the next game. It was a risk because I decided to make six changes to the team. If you have one or two changes the players can be in the middle of the others, and you don’t miss the quality, but when you change six players they aren’t used to playing 90 minutes.”
Pereira continued: “This is the risk. I decided to take this risk. I decide because I need to think about the Brighton game, because it’s very important for us. We need to go there with fuel and energy. It is difficult to face them away. My decisions were not just about this game, it was worth thinking about the next game, and was a pity for me, because my intention was to give confidence to everybody. When we conceded the first goal we lost a bit of the confidence to play. We gave them (Fenerbahce) confidence.”
Pereira added: “They scored the second but then we started to play to our level. We scored. This is important to keep in our minds, Europa League is not easy. I know Fenerbahce very well and they came here to fight for the result.”
The match was a test of resilience for Nottingham Forest, who had to withstand a determined Fenerbahce side. Pereira’s decision to make six changes to the starting lineup was a calculated risk aimed at preserving energy for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Brighton. The changes, however, initially disrupted the team’s rhythm, allowing Fenerbahce to gain confidence and push for a comeback.
Despite the early setbacks, Forest managed to regain composure and scored a crucial goal that helped cement their position in the competition. Pereira’s strategic planning, focusing on the broader picture of the season, proved vital. The manager’s emphasis on conserving energy for future challenges highlights the balancing act required in managing multiple competitions.
The victory against Fenerbahce serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by European competitions, where every decision can have significant implications. For Nottingham Forest, advancing in the Europa League while maintaining focus on domestic commitments is a testament to their growing maturity and adaptability under Pereira’s guidance.
