Daniel Farke
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has shared insights into his friendship with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola ahead of their upcoming clash at Elland Road. The relationship between the two managers dates back to Farke’s time at Norwich City, where their mutual respect for each other’s footballing philosophies laid the foundation for a lasting bond. Farke recently revealed that Guardiola reached out to him following Leeds’ 5-0 defeat to Arsenal to discuss strategies ahead of Manchester City’s own encounter with the Gunners.
Daniel Farke said: “I don’t like to speak too much about it – he’s definitely allowed to [talk about] this, he is the best manager in the world. But we are pretty close together and like to chat about football and also about life in general.”
Reflecting on their first meeting in 2019, Farke recalled Norwich City’s memorable 3-2 victory over a dominant Manchester City side. However, Guardiola has since had the upper hand, winning the subsequent three encounters with an aggregate score of 13-2. Despite the competitive nature of their meetings, Farke remains full of admiration for Guardiola’s innovative approach to the game.
Daniel Farke said: “Pep always evolves and develops, he’s always ahead of the wave. He has played with a false nine a few years ago when no-one even knew what a false nine was, and with inverted fullbacks when no-one even knew about this. He has rotated teams when everyone thought it’s more about automatism and consistency.”
Farke emphasized Guardiola’s influence on modern football, noting his ability to stay ahead of tactical trends. The Leeds manager praised Guardiola for his capacity to inspire and transform the game, making it challenging for opponents to prepare against his ever-evolving strategies.
Daniel Farke said: “Once everyone adapts and tries to copy him, then he’s again ahead of a wave and changes his set-up. So he’s probably the manager who has influenced and inspired the game most in the history of football. This was what makes him so special and he’s simply the best and for that it is difficult to prepare.”
As Leeds United and Manchester City prepare to meet once again, Farke’s comments highlight the deep respect and camaraderie shared between two of football’s most astute minds. Their encounter at Elland Road promises to be another intriguing chapter in their ongoing footballing narrative.
