Sunderland are set to face Bournemouth in a crucial Premier League encounter this Saturday lunchtime. The match at the Vitality Stadium comes as Bournemouth await news on the fitness of their key midfielder, Lewis Cook. Cook missed the recent 0-0 draw against West Ham due to a suspected hamstring injury, casting doubt on his availability for the upcoming fixture against Sunderland.
Andoni Iraola said: “Yesterday he felt something training. Still, we haven’t assessed him properly. We haven’t done the MRI, but it doesn’t look big, but I think there has to be something there. I think it’s in the hamstring, and that’s the reason he was out today. We will have to wait for the MRI and see if it’s something small, but I think there is an injury there.”
Lewis Cook’s absence would be a significant blow for Bournemouth, as he has been a pivotal figure in their midfield. His last encounter with Sunderland ended in disappointment when Bournemouth squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at the Stadium of Light. Cook’s day worsened when he received a red card for violent conduct in the 96th minute.
Andoni Iraola said: “The first half I was quite disappointed. We were not being aggressive on the ball and didn’t look like a danger to them. The second half was more open. We got into good situations, it was a better game but first half was poor for us. It is about winning your duels, wanting the ball and attacking the spaces and we improved in the second half. We have recovered a bit more depth and especially in the second half this was very good. They put you under pressure straight away and we have to value this point. We have 38 points and I hope next to get past 40 and then we will see where we are when we arrive.”
Bournemouth’s recent draw against West Ham has left them on 38 points, just two points ahead of Sunderland, who are currently 12th in the table. Sunderland’s recent 3-1 defeat to Fulham has added pressure on them to secure points against Bournemouth. As the season approaches its final stretch, both teams are eager to solidify their standings and avoid being dragged into a relegation battle.
The outcome of Saturday’s match could be pivotal for both clubs as they aim to surpass the 40-point mark, often considered the benchmark for Premier League survival. With Cook’s fitness still uncertain, Bournemouth will need to adapt quickly to maintain their competitive edge against a Sunderland side looking to bounce back from their recent setback.
