Bukayo Saka Arsenal
Bukayo Saka delivered a standout performance in Arsenal’s North London derby victory over Tottenham, reigniting his form and leadership qualities. The 23-year-old Arsenal winger, who donned the captain’s armband, played a pivotal role in setting the tempo and showcasing his leadership skills, which have often gone underappreciated. As part of Arsenal’s leadership group and a key figure in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, Saka continues to be a player admired by his peers. Despite recent mixed form, Saka remains a reliable presence for the Three Lions, consistently delivering when called upon.
John Cross said: “His best performance for some time as he shone, made things happen and led by example. This was a performance with a real message that Arsenal were back in the title race – and Saka set the tone.”
Cross added: “He has a new contract to celebrate and he is Arsenal’s crown jewel. But when you are as good as him and as reliable as him, that drives very high standards. There is absolutely no doubt that he is in the team and starting XI never mind the squad. You could see his determination and desire to put things right – and he did.”
On Declan Rice, Cross commented: “He is absolutely stitched on for the England starting line-up. He is full of energy and power. He will be England’s driving force in the United States.”
Saka’s performance was part of a broader analysis by John Cross in the ‘England Player Ratings’ series, which evaluates the Three Lions’ stars in the lead-up to the World Cup. Saka received an 8/10 rating for his impactful display, which was seen as a significant statement of Arsenal’s resurgence in the title race. Despite the mixed form, Saka’s new contract and consistent performances have solidified his place as a key player for both club and country.
Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze also caught the eye with a game-changing performance against Spurs, earning an 8/10 rating. Eze’s two-goal display demonstrated his quality in a central role, although his chances of making the World Cup squad remain a tight call due to competition in the No10 position.
Cross remarked on Eze: “Wow. This was a game-changing performance. Two goals, a marauding display as he covered every blade of grass and one filled with quality. He is a No10 and revelled in the central role.”
In contrast, Djed Spence and Conor Gallagher struggled to make an impact in the derby, each receiving a 5/10 rating. Spence found himself overwhelmed defensively, while Gallagher was unable to control Arsenal’s midfield, highlighting the challenges faced by players in struggling teams.
Cross noted on Spence: “He played at left wing back and Saka had him on toast as the saying goes. Very few chances to get forward because he was overwhelmed from a defensive point of view.”
On Gallagher, Cross said: “Could not get a handle on Arsenal’s midfield. Was left chasing shadows and, even though he was brought in to close down and try to frustrate, Gallagher just could not get a grip.”
As England’s World Cup preparations continue, the performances of key players like Saka and Eze will be closely monitored, with the competition for squad places intensifying.
