Ebere Eze
Ebere Eze’s transition to Arsenal has been marked by challenges in securing consistent game time, despite showcasing his potential in recent matches. His standout performance in the FA Cup fourth round victory over Wigan, where he contributed two assists, highlighted his capabilities. However, with Martin Odegaard sidelined due to injury, Eze found himself on the bench for the Premier League clash against Wolves, as Bukayo Saka was preferred in the No. 10 role.
Paul Merson said: “That was Wigan, no disrespect, this is the Premier League. You’re the one that’s got to make things happen, there’s a lot of pressure on you. If this goes wrong tonight, everybody looks at the No.10. With the way that Wolves play, there is not going to be a lot of space for him, he’ll get a lot more space out on the wing. If I was Eze I’d be thinking ‘am I going to play for Arsenal many more times this season?’ I thought they were bringing Eze in as the X-factor, that No.10 to make things happen, his ball against Wigan the other day was through the eye of the needle. He can play that ball, he’s got that in him, he’s played there a lot more than Saka and as I’ve said it’s not a position you just throw someone into. I hope Saka gets a hat-trick but it’s not where you just throw someone in and say ‘go and enjoy yourself’, it’s a hard position.”
Mikel Arteta said: “Yes, some superb goals and his intentions, I think the risk that he took in the final third, the amount of shots that he tried to take as well, I think that’s really positive. That’s what I want from him.”
Eze’s journey at Arsenal seems to mirror the adjustment periods experienced by other players like Kai Havertz and Declan Rice, who also needed time to acclimate to the demands of playing at the Emirates. While Eze has faced scrutiny from manager Mikel Arteta and his teammates regarding his defensive work rate, Arteta has been vocal in his praise for Eze’s attacking contributions, particularly in a more withdrawn midfield role. The manager’s comments suggest a belief in Eze’s potential to become a pivotal player for the team, provided he adapts to the tactical and physical demands of Premier League football.
As Arsenal continues to navigate the season, the question remains whether Eze will be able to cement his place in the starting lineup or if he will continue to be an option off the bench. His ability to unlock defenses and provide that ‘X-factor’ could be crucial for Arsenal’s aspirations, but it will require patience and perseverance from both the player and the club.
