Pep Guardiola
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has expressed more concern about his team’s performance than the gap to Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table. Despite the pressure to catch up with Arsenal, Guardiola emphasized the importance of improving Manchester City’s game to secure victories.
Pep Guardiola said: “I understand your question. Every time in the last weeks when I go before the game in flash interviews always is you lose you’re losing everything and going to disappear from planet Earth. What I’m saying is what do we have to do to beat Fulham? What do we have to do to make the second half closer to the first? What is the reason why in the second half we are still dropping our performances? If we don’t improve that, we will not win – maybe if not against Fulham, against Newcastle or the next. Until they get better at controlling games than they currently are, the City manager will not be getting carried away. When we have 60 or 70 per cent of new players, we don’t have what we had in the past. After the second or third season we had done it, we are able to do it but now we have to prove it. I don’t know if we are able to win three, four, five, six games in a row. I don’t know. I don’t know. It was not two months ago, it was days ago. They have done really good things. I have the feeling for many many months but not consistent enough to control many aspects to win the games. We equalised the [Liverpool] game with a deflected cross from Rayan Cherki, and goes to the head of Erling and intelligent run from there. From a deflection.”
Guardiola’s comments highlight his strategic focus on addressing performance issues within the team, particularly in maintaining consistency throughout matches. His analysis suggests that while Manchester City has shown flashes of brilliance, there is a need for sustained control over matches to ensure victories. The manager’s reference to a recent game against Liverpool, where a deflected cross led to a goal, underscores the unpredictable nature of football and the necessity for his team to manage other aspects of the game to mitigate such uncertainties.
Manchester City’s current situation involves integrating a significant number of new players, which Guardiola acknowledges as a challenge in replicating past successes. His remarks reflect a broader concern about the team’s ability to string together a series of wins, which is crucial for mounting a serious challenge for the Premier League title. As the season progresses, Guardiola’s focus remains on refining the team’s performance to bridge the gap with Arsenal and achieve their objectives.
