Granit Xhaka
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has opened up about the initial skepticism he faced after deciding to join the Black Cats during the summer transfer window. Leaving behind the promise of Champions League football with Bayer Leverkusen, Xhaka embraced the challenge of leading a newly promoted Premier League side, with many predicting a relegation battle. Contrary to these forecasts, Sunderland has thrived under the leadership of manager Regis Le Bris, with Xhaka earning praise for his midfield performances and leadership on and off the pitch.
Granit Xhaka said: “People were laughing at me, to be honest. Even the closest part of my friends said to me, ‘Why are you going back?’ They said, ‘Yeah, okay, you can go back to Premier League, but why are you going back to Sunderland?’ I said, ‘Because I love the challenge’. And I had the feeling I needed a new challenge. After two years in Germany, where we won, in the first year, nearly everything – unbeaten in the Bundesliga, won the cup, lost the final in the Europa League, which was very painful. I just had the feeling with the owner [Kyril Louis-Dreyfus] when I spoke with them, with the club, with the coach, this is the right club for me. Because the people are very humble. It’s a small city, where I grew up – I see exactly myself, how I grew up.”
Xhaka’s decision to join Sunderland was met with skepticism, even from those closest to him. However, the midfielder was driven by a desire for a new challenge after a successful stint in Germany. His move was not just about football; it was about finding a club and a city that resonated with his personal journey and values. His influential role at Sunderland has been a testament to his commitment and adaptability, proving critics wrong as the team has performed admirably in the Premier League.
Currently, Xhaka is sidelined due to injury, and his return to first-team action remains uncertain. Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris provided an update on Xhaka’s condition during a recent press conference.
Regis Le Bris said: “No update on Granit yet, but he’s doing well. He was running on the treadmill today, so it’s positive.”
Despite his injury, Xhaka’s influence continues to be felt at Sunderland, both in spirit and leadership. His recovery progress is being closely monitored, with positive signs as he begins to regain fitness. The club and its supporters eagerly await his return to the pitch, where he has become a pivotal figure in their Premier League campaign.
