Wilson Odobert, the young French winger at Tottenham Hotspur, has opened up about the significant role head coach Thomas Frank has played in his development this season. After enduring a challenging first season with Spurs due to hamstring issues, Odobert has become a key player in the current campaign, making 31 appearances and contributing five assists and two goals.
Wilson Odobert said: “We have a good relationship. He trusts me and I feel that trust. It’s by having that close, trustable relationship that I’m able to feel freer out on the pitch and do things I’m capable of. We work a lot with the coach, we have a lot of videos, we all try to focus on our improvement and we work as much as we can to make things change. I think I have to keep improving, both as a player and as a person. It’s true that in football we talk a lot about statistics at the moment, so I’m trying to improve those stats but, more than anything, to help the team and be someone who contributes to this team as much as possible.”
Odobert has shown remarkable progress in recent weeks, particularly in matches against Borussia Dortmund and Burnley, where he provided three assists. His versatility has been evident as he has adapted to playing on both flanks and in the number 10 role within Frank’s 3-4-3 formation. This tactical flexibility has allowed him to make a significant impact on the field.
Wilson Odobert added: “It was an important game for us. We had to give it everything, because we hadn’t won for a little while to get that winning mentality back. It was a good performance from the team. But it was only one match and I’m not going to rest on my laurels. I want more, I want more for the team and I want more personally as well. But, right now, I’m focused on the team and getting better and getting the results we need. We’re very aware we need to improve the results and make our fans happy.”
Odobert’s journey to Tottenham has been marked by significant milestones. He began his career in the youth system at PSG, which he credits as foundational in his early development. After a stint with Troyes, part of the City Football Group, and a move to Burnley under Vincent Kompany, Odobert transitioned to Tottenham. He has now surpassed 50 appearances for the north London club, a testament to his growth and adaptation to the Premier League.
Wilson Odobert reflected: “I trained in the PSG youth system when I was young. When I arrived (in England), I was just a kid. I was discovering living abroad for the first time. I wasn’t in my country. Of course, it was a bit difficult at the beginning, with the adaptation of the language and being away from my parents.”
As Odobert continues to settle into life in England and the Premier League, his focus remains on contributing to Tottenham’s success and making the fans proud. His relationship with Thomas Frank and the trust placed in him have been pivotal in his recent form, and he is determined to build on this foundation for both personal and team achievements.
