Mikel Merino
Arsenal has been dealt a significant blow as Mikel Merino is set to miss an extended period due to a bone injury in his right foot. The injury, sustained during a match against Manchester United, has prompted Arsenal to consider making a potential loan move for a midfielder before the transfer window closes.
Mikel Arteta said: “Further to sustaining a foot injury towards the end of our game against Manchester United on January 25, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed Mikel Merino has a bone injury in his right foot. Mikel is expected to be out of action for an extended period, with the aim of returning to full training before the end of the season.”
Mikel Merino said: “Time to stop now with a foot injury. Sometimes life throws this kind of challenges when is less convenient.”
Mikel Arteta said: “The window is there and I mean we are Arsenal and we have to be looking at it, ‘Okay, what do we need?’ And we have to be actively looking and then, whether we can do it or not, that’s a different story. But our job is to always be very prepared because something can happen, so hopefully it’ll be very positive.”
The injury to Merino, who has been a pivotal figure for Arsenal this season with six goals and three assists in 33 appearances, comes at a crucial time. The Gunners are currently competing on multiple fronts, including the Premier League, Champions League, and the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Merino’s versatility, having been deployed both as a central midfielder and a centre forward, will be sorely missed.
The club’s management is now under pressure to reinforce the squad depth, particularly in the midfield area, to maintain their competitive edge. Arsenal’s proactive approach in the transfer market could prove vital in sustaining their momentum as they aim for silverware this season.
As Arsenal continues to navigate through this challenging period, the club remains optimistic about their prospects. With Arteta at the helm, the Gunners are poised to tackle any obstacles, ensuring no stone is left unturned in their pursuit of success.
