Douglas Luiz Aston Villa
Midfielder Douglas Luiz’s loan tenure at Nottingham Forest has been unexpectedly cut short after just five months. Initially set to remain at the City Ground for the entire 2025/26 season, the Brazilian joined the Reds on loan from Juventus in August. His arrival was anticipated to bolster the team’s midfield, but the club was always poised to make a critical decision regarding his future. The loan agreement included a conditional obligation to buy, which would have been activated upon Luiz making a set number of appearances.
Nottingham Forest said: “Nottingham Forest can confirm midfielder Douglas Luiz has departed the club, having been recalled by parent club Juventus. He made eight appearances for the club in the Premier League, three of which were as a substitute.”
The decision to recall Luiz comes amidst a mixed impact he had during his stint with Forest. The obligation to purchase Luiz for a reported £22 million would have been triggered if he had made 15 league appearances, each lasting at least 45 minutes. However, with only eight appearances, Forest faced a pivotal decision on whether to invest heavily in the player. Luiz’s last appearance for Forest was against Braga in the Europa League, where he was substituted with over 20 minutes remaining. He was subsequently absent from the matchday squad when Forest secured a 2-0 victory over Brentford, a move attributed to illness by head coach Sean Dyche.
Sean Dyche said: “He is a very good player. I said when we played him in Europe we probably rushed him back, but because of his experience he has used that wisely to be back. It doesn’t surprise me there is interest from other clubs in good players. That’s the nature of the business. It’s a doubled-edged sword. That’s part of modern football.”
Chelsea had expressed interest in Luiz earlier this month, but a return to his former club Aston Villa seems more probable. Forest now faces a crucial period as the transfer window approaches its deadline on February 2. The club is expected to be active in the market as Dyche aims to refine his squad further.
The decision to end Luiz’s loan spell raises questions about Forest’s strategy and whether they have made the right move regarding the midfielder. With the club’s Premier League survival hopes still in the balance, the coming weeks will be critical in shaping the team’s fortunes.
