Lucas Bergvall, the promising 19-year-old midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur, has undergone surgery on his left ankle following a high ankle sprain sustained during a UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund. This injury has ruled him out of Sweden’s crucial World Cup play-off match against Ukraine in March.
Tottenham said: “We can confirm that Lucas Bergvall has today undergone surgery on his left ankle. The 19-year-old midfielder suffered a high ankle sprain during Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund.”
Thomas Frank said: “He keeps being very unlucky with injuries. It looks like a bigger one. He’s been assessed in the next couple of days, so we’ll know more about the time frame.”
Bergvall’s injury woes have been a recurring theme this season. The Swedish youngster had already missed several matches due to a concussion in November and was forced off the field during a victory over Crystal Palace in December. Despite these setbacks, Bergvall remained optimistic, expressing his determination to return stronger through a social media post.
The injury to Bergvall comes at a challenging time for Tottenham, who are currently positioned 14th in the Premier League standings. Head coach Thomas Frank is hopeful that the team’s Champions League form can inspire a turnaround in their domestic campaign. As they prepare for a crucial match against Burnley, Frank emphasized the importance of securing three points to potentially climb to 12th place.
In the absence of Bergvall, Tottenham will welcome back Conor Gallagher, who was ineligible for European competition. The former Chelsea player is expected to be available for both the upcoming league match and future Champions League fixtures. Additionally, Frank provided updates on other squad members, noting that Palhinha is making progress and could be fit for Burnley, while Dom Solanke, Destiny Udogie, and Xavi Simons have all recovered well and are expected to be available.
The Spurs’ coaching staff will be keen to ensure that the club’s Champions League momentum translates into improved performances in the Premier League, as they aim to climb the table and secure a more favorable position.
