James Garner
Former Everton winger Pat Nevin has expressed his belief that James Garner is in an ideal position to thrive at Everton, despite growing interest from other clubs. Garner’s impressive performances this season have not only sparked talks of a new contract but have also caught the attention of international manager Thomas Tuchel and several top clubs, including Manchester United.
Pat Nevin said: “Is Garner next to make a move? I don’t know. I think he’s better suited to where he is. There are some players that you just think you’re the right man for the right space there. You can walk away from that and make it ugly. I think, oddly enough, he’s one of those strange ones. I think, don’t take that next step up to another club, to a big club, because you might find yourself not playing. There’s politics, there’s other things. Because you’re not the fancy, flashy one, you’re the one that suffers. But because you had Cristiano Ronaldo, because you had Bruno Fernandes there, everyone kind of liked him but overlooked him. You’re the number one scapegoat. So I would say, Everton is a great place for him, and I think he should stay there.”
Garner’s current contract with Everton is set to expire in the summer, but it includes an option to extend his stay by an additional 12 months. This clause provides a safety net for both parties as contract discussions, which began before Christmas, are now reportedly at an advanced stage.
The midfielder’s outstanding form has led to calls for his inclusion in the senior England squad, further highlighting his potential. His performances in recent victories against Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have been particularly noteworthy, with Tuchel observing his display against Villa from the stands.
While interest from clubs like Manchester United and those in Serie A is understandable, Nevin believes Garner should focus on his development at Everton. The former Scotland international argues that Garner’s talents might be overshadowed at a larger club where high-profile names often take the spotlight.
As Everton and Garner continue negotiations, it remains uncertain whether the interest from other clubs will persist if he commits his long-term future to the Toffees. However, if Garner maintains his current level of performance, he is likely to remain an attractive prospect for top clubs.
