Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri found himself at the center of controversy following an incident during a match against Leeds United at Turf Moor. The young player, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on the day of the match, was involved in a spitting incident directed towards the Leeds fans. This act was reportedly in response to goading from the fans over his ongoing racial abuse case with Preston North End’s Milutin Osmajic.
Hannibal Mejbri said: “I did spit in the air as a ‘sign of defiance’ while facing the Leeds supporters, but I had no intention of spitting at anyone in particular. I knew I was far enough away that I would not reach them.”
The incident took place midway through the second half when Hannibal, who was not playing at the time, was delivering energy gels to Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Leeds fans reportedly accused him of fabricating the allegations against Osmajic, referencing a Burnley chant that suggested the issue was “in his head.” At that time, no verdict had been reached in the case, although Osmajic has since received a nine-game ban for racial abuse.
The club’s statement read: “Mr Mejbri has been subject to racist abuse on multiple occasions, from his youth growing up in France and in his time living in the UK. This abuse unfortunately is always there.”
In his defense, Hannibal expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging that spitting is inexcusable. However, he emphasized that his action was a gesture of defiance rather than an attempt to target any individual. The club argued against a six-match ban, typically imposed for spitting offenses, as Hannibal was not dismissed from the game, and the incident was not witnessed by the referee. Instead, they suggested a warning for future conduct.
The Football Association (FA) took into account Hannibal’s cooperation and early admission but maintained that spitting in the direction of a group is akin to spitting at an individual. They noted that had the spitting been aimed at someone specifically, it would have been considered a “grave matter.”
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges players face with racial abuse in football and the pressures they endure both on and off the pitch. While Hannibal’s actions were deemed unacceptable, the broader context of racial abuse and its impact on players remains a critical issue for the sport to address.
