Robin Roefs has emerged as a pivotal figure in Sunderland AFC’s squad since joining the club during the summer transfer window. His impressive performances have not only solidified his position as one of the Premier League’s most in-form goalkeepers but also earned him a place in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands plans. Despite receiving multiple international call-ups, Roefs is yet to secure his first senior cap.
Johan Derksen said: “That goalkeeper, Roefs, he belongs in the Dutch national team. He’s absolutely the best goalkeeper.”
Roefs’ journey with Sunderland has been marked by significant achievements, including a recent 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Speaking after the match, Roefs expressed his satisfaction with the team’s progress and their determination to maintain momentum throughout the season.
Roefs said: “Before the game, I said I wanted a clean sheet and a win. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the clean sheet, but I guess the win is more important. I’m just so happy with the guys, the way they responded to Palace scoring the first goal. By the end of the game, we were the better team and deserved all three points.”
Despite Sunderland’s current position, Roefs emphasized that the team’s ambition extends beyond merely avoiding relegation. The squad’s focus remains on achieving more than just survival in the league.
Roefs continued: “Yes, we feel we can do something really special, but even at the start of the season, everyone was really positive. No one was talking about just doing enough to stay up. Our ambition was not just to survive. All of us wanted more, so every game we play, we aim to win.”
Roefs’ comments reflect the team’s belief in their capabilities, as they continue to challenge opponents both at home and away. The goalkeeper acknowledged the team’s resilience, particularly in overcoming early setbacks during matches.
Roefs added: “We show every game, we can make it difficult for every opponent. We went behind today, but still showed that belief we could hit back and win. It is not just at home, we have done that in away games too. We know the qualities in this team. Maybe the first ten or 15 minutes weren’t so great for us, and they had a few chances, but by the end we created a lot and could have won by more.”
As Sunderland edges closer to the 40-point mark, Roefs remains a central figure in their quest for success. His performances have not only bolstered the team’s confidence but also positioned him as a potential contender for the Dutch national team, a testament to his growing reputation in the footballing world.
