Tottenham Hotspur secured a significant 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League encounter, despite facing the challenge of having 13 players unavailable. This win marked a continuation of their impressive unbeaten streak at home in European competitions, now extending to 24 matches. The match saw Spurs captain Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke find the back of the net, with Wilson Odobert playing a crucial role in both goals. The victory was a much-needed morale boost for the team and their head coach Thomas Frank.
Thomas Frank said: “Yeah, I really enjoyed the performance and the win, of course. I think especially the first half, I felt we were very good. I think we started exceptionally well. On top of them, pressed them, calm on the ball, produced chances, created opportunities, scored a good goal, and kept going. And then scored the second goal, which of course is also super important. So, everything about the first half, I was extremely happy with.”
Thomas Frank said: “I think it’s definitely some of the best we’ve done. Second half, I would have loved us to keep the ball a bit better. I would have loved to have killed it with some of the big chances, just the 3-0. But we know in football it’s never easy, even if you play 11 against 10. Also because the momentum is they have to push a bit.”
Thomas Frank said: “And then of course, we all knew it was an important win to get. And especially at home, of course, we haven’t been as confident. So the performance and the win can we build on?”
Thomas Frank said: “The players are giving everything. I think that’s an extremely good sign about the culture. Extremely good sign that they want to do everything. That they are together, that we are together. Very impressive and we were a little bit down to the bare bones with the available players.”
The match was not without its dramatic moments. Referee Glenn Nyberg was advised to review a high challenge by Daniel Svensson on Odobert, which resulted in an upgraded red card for Svensson. This decision gave Spurs a numerical advantage, allowing them to capitalize further. Dominic Solanke, making his first start in eight months, scored the second goal, sealing the victory for Tottenham.
Frank expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, especially given the circumstances. The coach highlighted the impressive displays from players like Destiny Udogie and Dominic Solanke, who both returned to the starting lineup after significant absences. The tactical setup, which included a 3-4-3 formation, allowed players like Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert to shine, contributing significantly to the team’s attacking efforts.
Looking ahead, Frank emphasized the importance of translating this Champions League form into their Premier League campaign, starting with their upcoming match against Burnley. The coach acknowledged the challenges of maintaining consistency across different competitions but remained optimistic about the team’s potential to build on this victory.
