Burnley
Burnley FC has faced a challenging season, with the club currently sitting eight points away from safety in the Premier League. Despite a quiet transfer window so far, the club remains determined to strengthen its squad and secure its top-flight status. The latest episode of Burnley’s ‘Keeping the Faith’ documentary has provided fans with an inside look at the club’s transfer strategy and player developments.
Matt Williams, Burnley’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Alan’s preference is to do the loan with an option or obligation, but if it got to it he may do the permanent. The short-term [priority] is obviously goals, we need more goal threat in the team to give us the best possible chance of staying up. Be that loans, be that permanent signings, whatever, we can’t look back in April or May time and think: ‘we should have tried to do this in January’. The long-term focus is we need to get the squad-size down for the players who haven’t featured as much, for various reasons. It gives them the opportunity to either move permanently or get a loan move.”
Chairman Alan Pace added: “We’re always listening, looking and discussing. Do I know what that’s going to look like in this window? No. At the same time, do I see that because of injuries maybe because of needs on the pitch that there is a higher probability that there might be some changes? Yes. But the question will probably be: who might go out?”
Williams further explained: “The January transfer window is the hardest of the two windows. There’s an awful lot of work going on and an awful lot of calls going on, but in reality there’s very little happening in football in general. I think probably in that final week after the Spurs game going into deadline day we’ll see an awful lot more activity. We’re not going to give up, we’ll never give up in anything that we do. The minute we start giving up, we’re in all kinds of trouble.”
The documentary also shed light on player movements, notably the situation of Luca Koleosho. The young winger, who struggled for game time at Espanyol, has switched loan clubs to maximize his potential. Paul Jenkins, Burnley’s Director of Football Development, emphasized the importance of regular game time for Koleosho’s development. Jenkins reassured the player of his value to Burnley and hinted at potential loan opportunities for another winger, Jaydon Banel, to gain more playing time.
Paul Jenkins stated: “Part of my role here is to make sure the loan players are maximising their potential and to investigate if they’re not doing. Regular game time is really the most crucial part of Luca’s development. Unfortunately it didn’t happen at Espanyol, he was almost a victim of their success. A fresh start, a smiling face on Luca is exactly what we’re looking for.”
Despite the challenges faced, Burnley remains committed to its Premier League survival. The club is actively working to strengthen its squad and provide opportunities for its players to develop, ensuring a competitive edge in the remaining fixtures of the season.
