Urban Negi
Urban Negi, a promising young football talent, has recently signed with Everton’s academy, capturing the attention of the football community and inspiring South Asian football fans worldwide. At just nine years old, Urban’s journey from London to Merseyside highlights his passion for the game and the dedication of his family to support his dreams.
Lisa said: “When Urban was a toddler, my mum and dad used to look after him a couple of days a week. My dad would play football with him in the garden. Then, when he started school, a local grassroots team ran a multi-sports session in the park behind school on Fridays. Urban loved it, and the football part most of all.”
Rohan said: “He had some interest from other Premier League clubs in the north west but we were certain that we wanted him to play for a Merseyside club. We were impressed by the training at Everton, we also liked that they had only signed a small group of boys and emphasised each of their unique attributes or ‘super strengths’.”
Rohan added: “The reaction has been truly incredible, and honestly, quite overwhelming. For us, Urban signing for Everton is a celebration of his passion, dedication, and talent. He simply loves the game, and this opportunity is a testament to his hard work, regardless of his background. But we absolutely recognise what this can mean for others. But to see him being held up as an inspiration is deeply moving. The reaction validates the massive, untapped passion that the South Asian diaspora and the fans back on the subcontinent have for football. They are desperate for a visible connection to the elite game.”
Urban’s journey began in London, where he first caught the eye of top-flight clubs, including Crystal Palace. His move to Liverpool with his family last year marked a new chapter, leading to his recruitment by Everton. The decision to join Everton was influenced by the club’s focus on individual player development and the nurturing environment at Finch Farm.
The young footballer has settled well into Everton’s academy, where he continues to develop his skills. His story resonates with many, especially within the South Asian community, as it breaks stereotypes and highlights the potential for diverse talent in football. Urban’s parents, Lisa and Rohan, are keenly aware of the broader impact of their son’s journey, hoping it encourages other families and clubs to focus on talent and opportunity.
Urban’s passion for football is evident in his enthusiasm and dedication. His family remains supportive, focusing on helping him enjoy his childhood while nurturing his dreams of playing at Everton’s waterfront stadium. Although his journey is just beginning, Urban’s story is already a source of inspiration for many aspiring footballers.
