Shea Lacey
Manchester United’s young forward, Lacey, experienced a tumultuous evening during the FA Cup clash against Brighton, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Red Devils. The 18-year-old was brought on as a second-half substitute by Darren Fletcher and made an immediate impact, nearly scoring before Benjamin Sesko’s 85th-minute goal reignited hopes for a comeback. However, the night took a sour turn for Lacey and United.
Simon Hooper said: “Simon Hooper is correct in cautioning this rather petulant action which, of course, was a clear act of dissent. Hopefully, the player will not do it again.”
Lacey’s evening was marred by a sending-off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession. The first booking came in the 87th minute for a foul on Yasin Ayari, followed by a similar challenge on Ferdi Kadioglu just two minutes later. Former PGMOL chief Hackett supported referee Simon Hooper’s decision, emphasizing the need for discipline.
The young forward, visibly upset by the dismissal, protested the decision before leaving the pitch. His frustration was evident as he pulled his shirt over his face and kicked a wall on his way to the Old Trafford tunnel. In the aftermath, Lacey took to Instagram to express his remorse.
Lacey wrote: “I want to apologise to all of my teammates, staff, and the fans. I let everybody down tonight. I shouldn’t let my emotions get the better of me. I will do everything I can to make this right.”
Lacey’s red card means he will serve a one-game suspension, missing United’s upcoming Premier League fixture against league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on January 25. Despite the setback, the young talent remains determined to learn from the experience and make amends.
Manchester United will now focus solely on their Premier League campaign for the remainder of the season.
