Darren Fletcher Manchester United
Manchester United have confirmed that Darren Fletcher will serve as caretaker head coach for their upcoming FA Cup third-round match against Brighton at Old Trafford. The decision comes as the club continues discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick regarding a potential interim managerial role until the end of the season.
Darren Fletcher said: “They would like me to take the team for Sunday. There was a feeling that might have been the case from Monday but we wanted to focus on Burnley but, yeah, I’m tasked with leading the team on Sunday so all my focus and energy goes to that now.”
Fletcher continued: “I thought they put in a performance that should win the match. I think they created a lot of chances. I think they had 30 shots, goal line clearances, disallowed goal for, I’m not sure why. So if you look at it in that context, in terms of the shots and the domination that we had in the game, we should win the match, so I’m pleased with that. There was lots of good things, it wasn’t perfect. I thought we started slow. We improved as the first half went on and I actually challenged the players at half-time. I think they had more levels in them and I think they produced that at the start of the second half and scored two fantastic goals. Still lots to work on but I was really pleased with their efforts and how they tried to implement what we’d asked for them with very limited time to prepare.”
Fletcher’s appointment follows United’s recent 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor, a match that saw the team dominate with 30 shots compared to Burnley’s seven. Despite the draw, Fletcher expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their ability to create numerous scoring opportunities. He acknowledged that while the match wasn’t perfect, the players responded well to the challenges posed during the game, especially in the second half.
The decision to appoint Fletcher temporarily underscores Manchester United’s ongoing search for stability in their managerial ranks. As discussions continue with Solskjaer and Carrick, Fletcher’s immediate focus will be on preparing the team for the FA Cup tie against Brighton. His leadership will be crucial in navigating the team through this transitional period, aiming to build on the positive aspects of their recent performances.
