Hugo Ekitike
Liverpool’s preparation for their upcoming Premier League showdown against Arsenal has been overshadowed by concerns over the fitness of their top scorer, Hugo Ekitike. The French striker missed the recent 2-2 draw with Fulham, with manager Arne Slot confirming that Ekitike traveled with the squad to London, only to receive MRI scan results en route that raised concerns about his fitness.
Arne Slot said: “Yes, he travelled because he felt something during the training session. He felt something during the MRI scan and we got the results when we were flying. We were hoping it was a bit of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), which he also had. Because Alex Isak has been out and since Alex has been out, he doesn’t play 60 or 70 minutes and sometimes gets a bit of rest. He has to play 80 or 90 minutes every single game for the first time in his life without a winter break and for the first time, at Champions League level.”
Ekitike, who has netted eleven goals this season, is expected to play a crucial role in Liverpool’s efforts to secure a positive result against the league leaders. Slot faces significant decisions regarding the lineup, particularly in the attacking positions flanking Ekitike. Cody Gakpo, who recently returned to the starting lineup and scored against Fulham, is vying for a spot against Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker has impressed with his performances on the left side of the attack, showcasing his possession skills and ball control, which will be vital against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
On the right flank, Jeremie Frimpong has emerged as a standout performer, providing pace and an attacking threat. With three assists in recent weeks, Frimpong has been instrumental in compensating for any creative deficiencies in the squad. His ability to threaten in transition could be crucial against an Arsenal side that may struggle to create opportunities in open play.
Federico Chiesa is another option for Slot, though his inclusion would be unexpected at this stage. Dominik Szoboszlai might be chosen to add solidity on the flank and in central areas. In midfield, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch are all available for selection. If Frimpong starts in the forward line, Szoboszlai is likely to shift centrally, providing his usual workhorse qualities.
Defensively, the competition for the left-back position between Andy Robertson and Milos Kerkez continues, while Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are options on the right. Gomez, who has been recovering from injury, may be utilized for his defensive instincts as Slot aims to bolster the team’s defense at the Emirates.
