Sunderland AFC has made significant strides in the transfer market following their dramatic Championship play-off final victory against Sheffield United. Within just two weeks, the club shattered its transfer record twice, first with the £20 million permanent acquisition of loan star Enzo Le Fee, and then surpassing that with a £30 million deal for Strasbourg’s sought-after midfielder Habib Diarra. This ambitious spending spree has positioned Sunderland prominently in discussions about net spending among Premier League clubs.
Regis Le Bris said: “I don’t think we’ll rush this process, because we are in a good place, I think, and it’s really important to find the right player to fit with our system, so it’s always a question of different elements, because you have the player, you have the club, you have us, and so it’s not an easy task, we’ll see.”
Le Bris continued: “When we say two or three spots in the squad, that means that our focus is orientated on these positions. But we don’t know if we will find the right targets. So you know that maybe you can reinforce this part of the squad, this part, this part. At the end, maybe we will have zero, or one, or two, or three. We don’t know, because it’s connected as well with the outgoing players. So we’ll see.”
The club’s aggressive moves in the transfer market have not gone unnoticed, especially with Diarra being a player Leeds United had shown interest in during the summer. However, the £30 million fee required to secure him from Strasbourg was beyond what Leeds was willing to commit. This reflects Sunderland’s determination to strengthen their squad as they prepare for the challenges of the Premier League.
According to data from TransferMarkt, Sunderland’s net spend since the summer of 2025 stands at a significant €136.90 million loss. This places them among the highest spenders in the Premier League, with only Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal recording higher net losses. In contrast, clubs like AFC Bournemouth and Brighton and Hove Albion have reported profits, showcasing different financial strategies across the league.
As Sunderland continues to navigate the January transfer window, manager Regis Le Bris has emphasized a cautious approach. His focus remains on finding players who seamlessly integrate into the team’s existing system, acknowledging the complexities involved in the transfer process. The club’s strategy involves careful consideration of both incoming and outgoing players, ensuring that any new additions align with Sunderland’s long-term objectives.
