Rodri Manchester City
Manchester City midfielder Rodri expressed his frustration after the team’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea, emphasizing the need for improvement as the Premier League season progresses. Despite making his first start at the Etihad Stadium since September, Rodri’s return was overshadowed by Enzo Fernandez’s late equalizer, which saw City drop two crucial points in the title race. The result left Manchester City six points behind league leaders Arsenal and compounded their recent struggles, including a midweek draw at Sunderland and a growing injury list.
Rodri said: “It’s frustrating of course but at the end it is what it is. We created enough chances to win the game three or four nil, but this is football. If you don’t take your chances with nothing they just draw the game. So we have to learn from this. There is still a long way and we just need to focus on the next games.”
Rodri continued: “First half was brilliant, enough to score three or four goals. In the second half we forgot a little bit how to play and they got control of the game, losing easy balls. Sometimes when you defend, defend, defend, they did not have much but they get a draw. There’s still a long way to go.”
He added: “It unbalances the team every single time a player goes out [injured] but of course the team has to adjust. It is not an excuse, we have enough talented players to play but in the second half we lose face a bit. We move on, we have the next game against Brighton at home and we have to win. We know that this season is going to be long so we have to keep going and going.”
The draw against Chelsea highlighted Manchester City’s recent issues, including their inability to capitalize on their first-half dominance. Despite controlling the game, City failed to convert their chances, allowing Chelsea to snatch a point with Fernandez’s last-minute goal. This result, coupled with their draw against Sunderland, has seen City slip to third place, with Aston Villa overtaking them on goal difference.
Adding to their challenges, City have been plagued by injuries, losing four players in just four days. Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that Josko Gvardiol’s injury appears serious, further depleting their squad. With a demanding January schedule ahead, City face the prospect of playing seven more games with potentially nine players unavailable.
Rodri’s comments underscore the importance of resilience and adaptability as City navigate this challenging period. The team will need to regroup and refocus as they prepare for their upcoming home fixture against Brighton, aiming to close the gap on Arsenal and maintain their title ambitions.
