Pep Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola shared his thoughts on Rodri’s significant contribution following his return in the Premier League draw against Sunderland. The midfielder’s presence was pivotal in helping City secure a point, especially after a challenging first half.
Pep Guardiola said: “He changed the game. He proved in 45 minutes that he is the best in his position. Football is about the players, with the build-up we struggled in the first half and with Rodri we struggled less. He broke the lines, we were more fluid, arrived better, we moved better and hopefully one year and a half without him we missed him a lot so hopefully he can stay because he makes us a better team.”
Despite Guardiola’s satisfaction with Rodri’s performance, Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva offered a more critical perspective on the team’s overall display.
Bernardo Silva said: “Two different halves. In the first half we didn’t play that well. We didn’t control the counter as well as we should. We attacked a bit too quick – we didn’t move them to find spaces. Second half we had a lot more chances and today was one of those days we couldn’t finish them. We are not happy because we wanted better than this.”
Rodri’s return to the field was a game-changer for Manchester City, as his ability to anchor the midfield allowed the team to regain control and fluidity in their play. His presence was complemented by fellow substitute Jeremy Doku, who provided an additional attacking threat. Guardiola’s praise highlights Rodri’s importance to the squad, especially after a prolonged absence.
However, Bernardo Silva’s comments reflect the team’s dissatisfaction with their inability to capitalize on the opportunities they created in the second half. Despite the improvements following the break, City was unable to secure a victory, leaving them with mixed feelings about the match’s outcome.
