Everton are reportedly keeping a close eye on Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, as speculation over the talented midfielder’s future continues to grow. Hackney, who has been instrumental in Middlesbrough’s push for automatic promotion, has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Everton. Despite a £20 million offer from Ipswich Town being accepted by Middlesbrough, Hackney chose to remain with his boyhood club, where he is flourishing under the guidance of new manager Kim Hellberg.
Clinton Morrison said: “If Palace were ever to sell Adam Wharton, I think they should go and get Hackney. I’ve seen him a lot for the England U21s and I watched him the other day when Middlesbrough played Hull and he ran the show in midfield. So I think Hackney’s one of those who I look at and I think, ‘you’ve got Premier League written all over you’. I think he manipulates the ball well, and his box-to-box style and his energy is great. I think a lot of Premier League clubs will probably be looking at him. I think they probably looked at him in the summer and wondered if he could make that step up? I don’t think taking chances on these players would be a gamble. I think Premier League clubs sometimes think, ‘should we take a risk on a Championship player?’ But there’s a lot of good players in the Championship. Palace are a prime example of getting quality players from that division over the years and excelling at the highest level, so you can find those gems.”
David Moyes said: “January is never a great window when trying to get the right value and the right players who you might want, but I think if we could add to it we certainly will. We might be looking at the loan market again and seeing what we need. Certainly, the people who do the job are working behind the scenes to see what might be possible.”
Hackney’s impressive form has seen him score three goals and provide six assists in 21 Championship appearances this season, helping Middlesbrough secure a strong position in the league. With 18 months remaining on his contract, Middlesbrough are determined to retain their top talent during the January transfer window. However, Everton’s interest remains, as manager David Moyes is keen to bolster his squad with emerging talent from the Championship, a strategy he has successfully employed in the past.
Moyes’ remarks indicate that Everton are actively exploring their options in the upcoming transfer window, considering both permanent and loan deals. As Hackney continues to shine in the Championship, his potential move to the Premier League becomes increasingly plausible, with Everton among the clubs closely monitoring his progress.
