Unai Emery
Harvey Elliott’s loan spell at Aston Villa has hit a stumbling block as manager Unai Emery grapples with the Liverpool loanee’s lack of playing opportunities. Elliott, who has been left out of Aston Villa’s squad for their Europa League clash with FC Basel, faces an uncertain future with the club. Despite featuring in five matches this season, Elliott’s absence from recent Premier League matchday squads raises questions about his long-term prospects at Villa Park.
Unai Emery said: “We are speaking with him and about his situation. He is not here with us. Hopefully, we can get the best for him and the best for us. I respect him as a player and as a person. He is training well, but we have one circumstance with him. I have spoken with him two or three times about the situation we have with him. Firstly, my decision and also the situation. He is on loan playing with us, but he is not definitely adding to us with a permanent contract.”
Elliott’s loan agreement includes a clause for a permanent £35 million transfer, which would be triggered upon reaching 10 appearances. However, with only five appearances so far, the midfielder’s future remains in limbo. His exclusion from the last seven Premier League squads further complicates the situation, despite his involvement in previous European fixtures.
Unai Emery, who returns to St. Jakob-Park with fond memories of his past triumphs, remains focused on building a new era with Aston Villa. The venue holds special significance for Emery, having led Sevilla to a Europa League victory over Liverpool in 2016. Nevertheless, Emery is determined to create new memories with Villa, emphasizing the importance of European competitions for the club’s trajectory.
Unai Emery said: “It was fantastic for me, and I learnt a lot through Europe and through facing different teams. Of course, here we won the third Europa League with Sevilla, we won here against Liverpool, it was a fantastic day and memory for me. To remember it is very good, but, in football, I want to build a new moment, a new era, a new way, and with Aston Villa, I am so, so excited to be playing in Europe … two years ago in the Conference League, last season in the Champions League, and this year in the Europa League. Of course, it is very important for Aston Villa’s trajectory, our players’ trajectory, and my own trajectory. I’m so, so motivated, and of course playing tomorrow here I can remind myself of the moment I had here … We are focusing, and we are understanding: what does it mean for everybody to play in Europe?”
As Aston Villa aim for a fifth victory in six league phase fixtures, Emery’s focus remains on the team’s success in Europe. The situation with Harvey Elliott, however, presents a challenge that requires careful consideration, with potential implications for both the player and the club. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining Elliott’s future, as discussions continue between Emery, Elliott, and Liverpool regarding the best path forward.
