Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Gabriel Jesus made a triumphant return to the pitch for Arsenal, coming on as a substitute in the 62nd minute during their recent match in Belgium. This appearance marked the end of an 11-month recovery journey following a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The Brazilian forward was visibly emotional as he was warmly embraced by teammates and staff, reflecting the long and arduous path he has traveled to return to competitive football.
Mikel Arteta said: “Yeah, especially when you get injured, then everyone reaches out to you, then you get surgery, and everyone is fully behind you. Then there is a moment when you are alone, almost, and you have to go through a lot of pain and difficult moments and uncertainty.”
Arteta added: “So happy for him. I think you can see how much we all love him. It’s been a very, very difficult and long journey. For 11 months, he’s been fighting against another very difficult injury, and to see him back with that smile, with that energy and with that quality in his first performance with us is something really impressive, and we’re all delighted for him.”
The Spaniard continued when asked if Jesus can play a big role this season: “Yes, especially if he continues to perform in the manner that he’s doing and the energy that he’s putting in training. I think he brings something else, and I was really happy to see that. And for him as well, for his confidence to grow, for his teammates to feel him as well, because some of them haven’t played with him. So Gabi has a really special quality, which is that suddenly he connects everybody around him, and that’s something that we as a team need, and it will make us better.”
Jesus’s injury occurred during an FA Cup defeat to Manchester United earlier this year. Since then, he has been diligently working on his recovery, including participating in a behind-closed-doors friendly. His return to the matchday squad against Chelsea and Brentford signaled his readiness, but it was in Belgium where he finally made his on-field comeback. Despite being denied twice by the opposing goalkeeper and hitting the crossbar, his presence was a significant morale boost for the team.
Arsenal’s victory in Belgium not only marked a personal milestone for Jesus but also solidified the team’s position at the top of the Champions League table with 18 points. With two games remaining, Arsenal is poised to advance to the knockout rounds, bolstered by Jesus’s return and the positive energy he brings to the squad.
