Unai Emery
Aston Villa’s impressive 2-1 victory over Arsenal has sparked discussions about their potential to challenge for the Premier League title. With Emi Buendia’s injury-time winner propelling Villa to third place, the team has now defeated both Manchester City and Arsenal, leading to speculation about their title chances. Despite manager Unai Emery’s efforts to downplay the conversation, pundits Chris Sutton and Conor Coady believe Villa could achieve even greater heights.
Chris Sutton said: “They are in a title race, alright, they had an iffy start to the season. They have beaten Man City, they have beaten Arsenal, they are there by right. Alright I agree, do they have a deep enough squad? But the other thing is Ollie Watkins hasn’t really gotten going for them. If he starts to really hit the heights, which he is capable of, they could go up even another level. I think you can’t be anything other than impressed by Unai Emery’s team. They are very principled in the way they play. While football has changed this year to being more of a set-piece game and Arsenal are more direct, Unai Emery just carries on playing the way they have always played. They provoke the press, they will play out from the back, through the thirds – they are a great watch.”
Conor Coady said: “I think they have got more gears to go through, they are an outstanding football team. I love him as a football manager, I think he is absolutely brilliant, I really do. I think they are in a title race. Will they win it? I think it’s going to be really, really tough. But they are in a title race. I think the midfield three for them is right up there in the league. The midfield three is outstanding, Onana, Kamara and Tielemans, that is up there with the best because of the way they play, the way they are doing things, the way they stick to their principles. There is a structure about them. And there is a reason they are third in the division, they are a fantastic football team with a brilliant manager.”
Aston Villa’s current form is undeniable, with the team securing five consecutive wins in the Premier League. This remarkable run has elevated them to third place, fostering discussions about their potential to secure their first league title since 1981. Sutton and Coady’s comments highlight the team’s strengths, particularly their tactical discipline and the potential of key players like Ollie Watkins. While the depth of the squad remains a question, the pundits agree that Villa’s principled style of play under Emery makes them a formidable contender. The midfield trio of Onana, Kamara, and Tielemans has been particularly praised for its effectiveness and structure, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
As the season progresses, Aston Villa’s ability to maintain their momentum and handle the pressure of a title race will be crucial. The upcoming fixtures will test their resilience and depth, but with Emery at the helm, the Villans are poised to continue their impressive campaign.
