Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker addressed the media ahead of their crucial Champions League clash with Inter Milan, firmly stating that the team is not distracted by the ongoing Mohamed Salah situation. The Egyptian forward was notably absent from the squad traveling to Milan due to recent tensions following his public outburst. Despite this, Salah participated in training sessions, indicating his continued involvement with the team.
Alisson said: “We know it’s a personal situation and we respect that. We played our last game on Saturday night and there’s not been too much time. Time together at training was to rest and recover and focus on a huge team. This isn’t a situation that makes us happy. On a personal level, we all love Mo and he’s a hugely important player for the team. He is a wonderful human being and a spectacular footballer. The situation isn’t nice. We were a little bit caught by surprise but we know it’s a personal situation so we are leaving it to him and the club.”
Alisson continued: “It doesn’t matter what we think. Of course, yes,” he said when asked about his support for head coach Arne Slot. “The Premier League last season. Before Arne came in everyone was talking about the huge challenge of substituting Jurgen Klopp. It looks like everyone takes for granted what we achieved last season. That should be enough but we believe in his knowledge, his style of playing that he is capable of helping us to turn around this situation. My relationship with the manager is fine.”
Alisson added: “It’s not only about ourselves but that’s the situation with the club as well, they trust him. It’s not only his responsibility, as a player I share it with him. Of course, he’s the man responsible for how the team plays, but we are taking the responsibility and the ones that take action and can change everything. It doesn’t make the situation any easier, but we are trying to do that. We have the desire to change the situation and the manager does as well. I hope he plays again for the club but that’s a personal situation between Mo and the club,” he said. “We as his team-mates and his friends we hope the best thing happens for him, but as Liverpool FC players we want the best for the club. We want a win-win for him and the club. Him not being available is a consequence of what he did. He’s smart enough to know that. I haven’t spoken to Mo about it how I want to talk. We have a good relationship, it’s not just a team-mate, we spend so much time together. We are good friends. You share so many moments together, happy moments, sad moments, that creates a bond between people. I will have a conversation but it’s going to be private because it’s personal.”
Alisson’s comments reflect a strong sense of unity and determination within the Liverpool squad. The Brazilian emphasized the importance of focusing on their upcoming matches and supporting manager Arne Slot, who has been under scrutiny following the challenges of succeeding Jurgen Klopp. The goalkeeper’s backing of Slot highlights the trust and belief the players have in his leadership and tactical approach.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Salah’s future at the club, Alisson’s statements suggest that Liverpool is committed to maintaining their competitive edge in the Champions League. The team’s ability to navigate internal challenges while staying focused on their objectives will be crucial as they face Inter Milan in a pivotal match.
