Tottenham Hotspur managed to secure a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with Cristian Romero emerging as the hero with a last-minute equalizer. The result was a testament to Spurs’ resilience and determination, especially after facing criticism from fans following their recent performances.
Thomas Frank said: “I think our fans, exceptional, travelling, 3,000 up here, the way they supported us throughout the game, singing, we also heard them singing and praising Vic throughout the game. That’s togetherness. They put so much effort into it, matched the effort from the team and that togetherness drove us forward and it gave us a more than well-deserved point.”
Frank added: “It’s very disappointing to concede because for me it’s never a penalty. Even speaking to some from Newcastle, who didn’t think it’s a penalty. We need the consistency, because that penalty, that would be given two times a game. I think the referee’s call on the pitch nailed it, and VAR can only be if it’s clear and obvious.”
Cristian Romero said: “I train every day with Leo Messi in the national team and I watch him. It’s a beautiful goal. It’s very important [to get a point]. In the last three or four games, the team knows it’s not been good enough. Today, the mentality to play like this, altogether it’s a difficult time, but especially in this game, I love the mentality.”
The match was not without its challenges, as Tottenham had to contend with a formidable Newcastle side that had won seven of their last nine matches. The Magpies dominated possession and created numerous chances, sending 40 crosses into the Spurs’ box. However, Tottenham’s defense, led by the returning Cristian Romero and Kevin Danso, held firm.
Tottenham’s attack struggled to find its rhythm, failing to register a shot on target in the first half. Despite this, Brennan Johnson’s return to the starting lineup provided a spark, with the Welsh international making several well-timed runs that troubled Newcastle’s defense. His efforts, along with those of Randal Kolo Muani and Mohammed Kudus, showcased glimpses of Tottenham’s attacking potential.
The game took a controversial turn when Newcastle was awarded a penalty, which Anthony Gordon converted to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. However, Romero’s late heroics ensured that Tottenham left St James’ Park with a valuable point. His acrobatic overhead kick in the dying moments of the match was a fitting reward for his defensive and attacking contributions.
Looking ahead, Tottenham will face Brentford at home, with manager Thomas Frank eager to turn around their recent home form. The match against Newcastle highlighted the team’s resilience and the importance of key players like Romero in pivotal moments. As Spurs continue to navigate a challenging season, the support and unity of their fans remain crucial.
