Just a week before Chelsea’s match against West Ham, manager Glenn Hoddle had said that he was hoping that extra responsibility he was given to Dennis Wise would reform his career and a bad record of getting booked. But that hope turned into a nightmare when a week later Wise lunged into a two-foot tackle to David Burrows which brought him a straight red. And the manager did admit that Wise will have to keep his emotions in check going forward.

Glenn Hoddle said “In the second half we controlled it. Why we didn’t do that with 11 men I don’t know. We’ve got to look at our first-half performance and say that isn’t good enough. We jogged his (Wise’s) memory before the game that he got booked in the last two games. It’s an emotional game and this is something Denis must work on.”
